In 1924, one of the few places in the world where Jews could own land was here for the 800,000 Jews in Maramures, Bucovina and Bessarabia. After World War II, about 450,000 Jews remained in Romania. By 1989, 300,000 emigrated leaving only 12,000 Jews today. [1999]
