Alternate names: Turda [Rom], Torda [Hun], Thörenburg [Ger]. 46°34' N, 23°47' E on the Aries River. historical name: Potaissa. Turda was first a Dacian settlement (Dierna) and later a Roman castrum (Potaissa). On the outskirts of the city are salt mines worked in Roman times. The city is an industrial center with a cement factory, a glass and ceramics factory, chemical works, and others producing silicon furnace linings and material for insulating electrical products.
