GENERAL:
"Nearly 2,000 Jewish cemeteries exist today in the Federal Republic of Germany. The total number of Jewish gravestones have been estimated at 600,000. Destruction, willful and by the elements, endanger these tombstones. A major task of the Central Archives in the first years of its existence was the preservation of the inscriptions by an extensive photo-documentary. Photographs of about 54,000 Jewish tombstones in Baden-Württemberg are now in possession of the Central Archives. In addition, the Central Archives stores photographs of more than 5,000 Jewish gravestones of Lower Saxony. Information on other documentation-projects of Jewish gravestone inscriptions is collected systematically." "Our archives took the photos of the gravestones in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Then came the "Landesdenkmalamt", established with the help of our photo documentation. We have paper-copies of all these documentations. They include names of all the people buried in each cemetery. Until now we have on our web site only a bibliography of the existing documentation. That's what you saw. One year ago I proposed to the Landesdenkmalamt to publish the lists of names of all the cemeteries (where documentation exists) on our web site. But they did not give us permission to do this. They want to do it by themselves. But they are not so quick. We could do it immediately, but we have not the right. You can write to them. Die judischen Gemeinden in Hessen: Anfang, Untergang, Neugeginn Darmstadt: by Paul Arnsberg/ Societats-Verlag, 1972, 2 vols. Briefly, Arnsberg has histories and descriptions of every Jewish community in pre-war Hesse, and importantly the location of the cemetery used by the community. For example, very small villages often used cemeteries in nearby towns. He also notes when the cemetery came into use, and the names of fallen Jewish soldiers from WWI, the Franco-Prussian War and even in some instances the Napoleonic War! - The Historisches Handbuch der juedischen Gemeinden in Niedersachsen und Bremen [Handbook of the History of the Jewish Communities in Lower Saxony and Bremen] records the history of these communities in 178 articles, encompassing social, economic and cultural backgrounds. It traces this history from the beginning, some of which goes back to the Middle Ages, and often ends with Nazi persecution. It also elaborates on the establishments of the new Jewish communities following the end of the Hitler dictatorship.
This handbook resulted from the collaboration between the Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Authority in Jerusalem and the Avraham Harman Institute of contemporary Jewry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. That is how Yad Vashem's know-how, the compilation of which goes back to the 1960's., contributed to the "Pinkas Hakelitot Germania", the Memorial Book of the Jewish Communities in Germany destroyed by National Socialism. The 178 articles of the history of the Jewish communities in Lower Saxony and Bremen are a combination of the above together with German historians' records of local and regional history.
