Zwingenberg lies in the Bergstraße district in southern Hesse, south of Frankfurt and Darmstadt. Town rights  granted in 1274 making it the oldest town on the Hessian Bergstraße. Jews and political dissenters were driven out and deported by the Nazis. The synagogue was not destroyed, but now is a house. In 1941, a prisoner-of-war camp was set up at the youth hostel. On 31 December 1971, Rodau was amalgamated with Zwingenberg. Jewish history. [August 2012]
