(German: Bischweiler) 23 meters by rail NE of Strasbourg, the 2005 population was 11,696. Bischwiller manufactures jute and machinery, brewing and iron-founding. The Jewish community dates from the 19th century. The first synagogue constructed in 1856 on the Street of the Finish Carpenters was destroyed during German occupation. A new synagogue was built in 1956 and dedicated in 1959 at 2, rue du Maréchal Foch. Bischwiller was seat of a rabbinate from 1910 with Schirrhoffen. photos. [January 2008]
