Located below the walls of the castle, the 14th-century ghetto is still mostly intact between the Faugères and Biaise gates. Entry is through a low archway that leads to Rue de la Juiverie and goes up to Rue Litanie, also known as the careyra de las litanias. Stones from the ancient synagogue can be seen in the cloister of the St-Nazaire Cathedral. To visit the ghetto, ask at the Pézenas tourist office. Pézenas is a town with some exceptional architecture, compact and all within a leisurely stroll include a medieval shop front and the confining narrow streets of the Jewish ghetto. Renaissance carving, elegant doorways all evidence of the town's history as the seat of local government in the 16th - 17th centuries. The dramatist Molière visited here in the 1650's helping to establish Pézenas as host to musicians and actors.
