In the address he gave on September 15th, 1957 for the ceremony unveiling the reconstructed synagogue, the president from Vitry-le-François, Mr. EDMUND LEVY, remembered his community. Here is an extract: "Venerable archives, miraculously saved, reveal the existence in 1321 of a Jewish community in the medieval city of Vitry-sur-Marne*. After 1870, the Jewish community of Vitry-le-François became important. It augmented Alsatian and Lorraine families that became established there, having left their property and lands to remain French. Touched by air raids in 1940, the synagogue was absolutely destroyed by dynamite by the Germans during Occupation. This reconstruction was performed on its ancient site.
